SUPPORT FOR SHIRT COLLAR: ALTERNATIVES TO PVC?

09/02/2023

This is the most popular question among our customers!
We are often looking for alternatives materials to PVC for support for shirt collars, in order to make the packaging of clothing more sustainable: what if PVC is already the most ecofriendly material?

Dubbi

No, compostable or biodegradable PVC does not exist.
Yes, cardboard alternative exists, but it needs lamination in order to be rigid enough to hold the collar of the shirts: in facts, for its nature, it absorbs moisture that makes it fragile. For obvious reasons, if laminated, the board would lose its "sustainable" characteristics (provided that the exploitation of this resource is considered sustainable), and would then be disposed of in general waste (always under the indications of its own municipality).

Other types of plastic material could be used, but the choice of PVC is dictated by its technical characteristics, by its conformity, workability and strength that guarantees excellent performance. For this reason PET interlays strips are not on market (too expensive production that would increase the prices of the product), as well as PS supports (fragile material subject to breakage due to temperature changes), or other plastic materials.

But let's go back to the original question:

if PVC is already the most ecofriendly material?

PVC that we use in PIR.SA.FA. is recognized as safe and biologically inert, harmless in contact with fish and bacteria. It contains no phthalates and has the Reach certification.

Suppliers we rely on guaranteed rigid films that comply with the most recent package requirements for heavy metals of the Toxic Packaging Clearing House (TPCH, formerly CONEG) legislation as well as the Commission Decision of 2011/534/EU.

PVC has a polymer structure, which makes it highly recyclable: its separation from other types of plastic is facilitated by the chlorine component that is detected in automated sorting processes in the separate collection of plastic.

There are two main ways to recycle PVC:

  1. Mechanical recycling: requires that the discarded PVC is shredded and then re-melted, reshaped with or without fresh material to create new products;
  2. Chemical recycling: involves chemical processes at the molecular level to synthesize the material and convert it into reusable components.

Noi in PIR.SA.FA., apply mechanical recycling, giving production waste to companies specialized in extrusion, so that they have second life!

In fact, at the end of production through our grinders, PVC waste is shredded becoming secondary raw material and in agreement with these companies, the material is used for different applications. For example, pipes, PVC conduits, injection molded accessories and much more are generated.

For these reasons, there is no need to worry about the environmental impact of the collar interlays strips: they are recyclable and produced always and in any case respecting the environment.

Pir.sa.fa. Collar interlays strips: shapes and set-up

Between what we produce, collar interlays stirps can be divided into 2 models:

  1. Shaped: centrally flared and back closure (standard size mm 35x485);
  2. MV: laterally flared and front closure (standard size mm 35x485).

Both models are available in other dimensions either lenght or width (other dimensions available here ).
The standard PVC thickness is 25/100.
